Two similar suppliers, meaningful differences
Octopus and OVO are the two UK energy suppliers most often described as "modern" or "challenger" brands. Both have strong apps, both promote renewable energy, and both have customer satisfaction scores well above the big six average. The differences are in what happens after you sign up.
Comparison
| Factor | Octopus Energy | OVO Energy |
|---|---|---|
| Smart tariffs | Market-leading: Agile, Go, Flux, Cosy, Intelligent Go | Limited: OVO primarily offers standard variable and fixed tariffs |
| App quality | Excellent — best rated in the market | Good — strong but not quite at Octopus's level |
| EV integration | Dedicated EV tariffs, charger installation, smart charging | Basic EV support, no dedicated tariff |
| Solar integration | Agile export, Flux tariff, solar installation | Basic SEG, no equivalent smart export tariff |
| Referral offer | £50 credit via referral link | OVO runs occasional referral promotions but not always-on |
| Green credentials | 100% renewable electricity as standard | 100% renewable electricity, carbon offsetting for gas |
Where Octopus wins
Smart tariffs are the decisive advantage. If you have or plan to get solar panels, a battery, an EV, or a heat pump, Octopus's tariff range is categorically better than OVO's. The Agile tariff alone — with half-hourly pricing that rewards flexible consumption — is worth significant money annually for the right household.
Where OVO wins
OVO's green credentials are marginally stronger in terms of carbon offsetting for gas usage. If that matters to you and you don't need smart tariffs, OVO is a legitimate choice. Their customer service is good, their app is solid, and their standard tariff rates are competitive.
The referral factor
Octopus has a permanent, always-on £50 referral programme. OVO's referral offers come and go. At the time of writing, the Octopus referral is the more reliable route to a switching bonus.
